Dear Colleagues You might have heard over the past couple of weeks that the budget for research in the next EU Framework Programme (FP7; 2007-2013) looks likely to be significantly lower than we hoped - indeed not much of an increase, on an annual basis, over the current FP6 level. Although there seems to be almost unanimous support among national governments for the creation of an ERC in FP7, we are worried that the budget cut might mean that there is insufficient funding to make the new ERC effective or, worse, that the ERC idea might even slip completely off the agenda. If the ERC doesn't happen in 2007, the chances are that it will never happen. We must make sure that our Ministers continue to give their full support to the creation of an independent European basic research-funding agency. We are calling on you to write now to your national Minister for Research. The Research Ministers meet in Cardiff (Wales, UK) on 11 July when Lord Patten will present the final report of his 'Identification Committee' for the ERC. Let's keep up the pressure!
